Welcome to our Simple Swaps Series
Most people have no idea where to start when thinking about cooking their food from scratch. It can seem overwhelming and can put a lot of people off it completely!
This is a major reason why meal delivery boxes have seen such a boom. The food is planned and portioned out, and all we have to do is read and follow a recipe card, which is also conveniently provided!
I’ve used them myself in the past, during hard seasons, and they are convenient, there is no denying it.
However…..
Knowing how to cook is a dying skill, and if we can learn how to swap out small things, it can lead to bigger changes in the way we think about our food.
Have you ever taken a look what is in a packet of Taco seasoning from the store?
As you know, the ingredients are listed in order of how much is in the product so the first ingredient is biggest amount.
The first ingredient in our store bought taco seasoning is Maltodextrin, a carbohydrate which is used in the food industry as a sugar substitute. No wonder it tastes good! However, it’s the hidden sugars and additives in our food, that over time, change our palettes and our health.
Rapeseed oil is a type of vegetable oil and is actually detrimental to our health in so many ways. Read about it here, and we will cover what healthy fats we SHOULD be consuming in another post.
But what if you could make this at home, knowing exactly what is going into it, and love it just as much if not more than the store bought you’ve always had?
Well, you can! Here’s how…
Simple Homemade Taco Seasoning – Why you’ll love it
- So easy to throw together
- Make it exactly as your family likes it
- Don’t have one of the spices? No problem, leave it out or sub for one of the alternatives
- You can make a big batch and store it in your spice rack for when you need it next time.
- You can rest easy knowing you know you’re not consuming hidden additives and fillers
What You’ll Need
A small bowl
Jar to store the finished mix if making more than one serving
Ingredients
Chilli powder (choose your strength here, mild or strong, it’s up to you)
Smoked paprika ( We prefer smoked but if you have or prefer regular, go for it!)
Cumin
Oregano
Onion granules
Garlic granules
Good quality salt
Pepper
Note: A dash of sugar can be added if just starting out cooking from scratch, with the view to reducing to nothing
Method
It literally couldn’t be easier, measure into the bowl, or directly into the jar, and stir or shake to combine!
That’s it!
I told you it was super simple. You can make some changes if you prefer other spices or herbs in it, I often put turmeric into mine for a colour and health boost, or some Cayenne pepper for the spice lovers!! (watch out, less is definitely more in this blend!)
Add to your chicken and onion/peppers when making fajitas, or to your browned mince for tacos and you have a beautifully spiced Mexican supper for you and yours to enjoy together.
Or how about adding to a yummy Chicken Taco Bowl? Serve with Guacamole and tortilla chips and you’ve mixed up a week night with ease!
Tell me what simple swaps you’ve made in the comments, or what you’d like to know how to make instead of buy. If you’ve liked this page, please share. Thanks friends x
