I love me a candle. The smells, the sound, the warm light, it’s beautiful.

What I don’t love are the chemicals that fill the house and disrupt our hormones!!

Have you ever thought about what goes into those candles? It does take some looking, but not much.

Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acrolein are common ingredients in well known candles and are known carcinogens. We are breathing these in for hours on end as we burn our favourite fragranced candles.

(I still sometimes like the crackle of a candle though and the dancing glow, so I burn beeswax candles when I feel the urge.)

Then there’s the fragrances themselves..

I have tried to reduce the fragrances in our home as much as I can, and I now find I get a headache when I’m around strong perfume smells!

I do, however, love my home to smell nice. That’s where essential oils and diffusers come in.

Essential oil blends for Diffusers

I love to use essential oils around the house, and in our medicine cabinet.

I’ve been using them for years and my older kids joke that if they ever said they were coming down with something as a kid, they could guarantee that mum would say ‘I’ve got an oil for that!’

Even though I use more whole herbs these days, I still have plenty of room in my heart for my essential oil collection!

This is because I have lots of diffusers dotted around my house. I use these for a few reasons.

  • Even a small one can fragrance a decent sized room beautifully
  • A few drops of oil is enough to last a few hrs
  • There are lots of combinations of oils that clear and purify the air, keep bugs away, and create a cosy feel.
  • There are plug in ones for your car or a hallway

Of course, if you like to make your own soap or candles, you can use essential oils there too.

Essential Oil Blends for Autumn

So a great way to welcome the Autumn in is with one of these 3 cosy blends that make your home smell amazing!!

1. Cosy Evenings

A Cosy room with a fire place and candles lit.
  • 3 Cinnamon
  • 3 Vanilla
  • 2 Frankincense
  • 1 Cedarwood

This does exactly what it says on the tin, creates the feel of a cosy evening. Grab your hot chocolate or your Pumpkin Spiced Latte and cosy up with your favourite book.

2. Spiced Cider

Multiple mugs and cups of spiced cider with scatter spices around them
  • 3 Cinnamon
  • 1 Clove
  • 3 Orange
  • 2 Vanilla

The smells of Autumn in a little package! You’ll love this blend drifting through your home on a crisp morning as you prepare for the day.

3. Autumn Leaves

A diffuser outside with autumn leaves
  • 6 Orange
  • 1 Patchouli
  • 1 Ginger
  • 1 Pine needle

If the crisp Autumn air is more what you crave, then this blend is for you. Earthy and fresh, this will smell amazing when you come in from a brisk walk and want to hang on to the feeling!

I am not really a brand-loyal girl when it comes to oils, I have a few that I love but I do like to make sure I research them well, so I know what each oil does, and the safety precautions for each one. (Some are not safe for pets or children and precautions should be followed when pregnant or breast feeding)

So there are a few ideas for your diffuser through this Autumn, to help your home smell cosy and welcoming.
