I LOVE Tortilla chips. I mean, I LOVE them. Dipped in cold spicy salsa, or piled high with warm salsa and melted cheese, I could eat them every day.
Obviously that’s not at all healthy, but what if we could make those seed oil fried tortillas a little more healthy for us? Without sacrificing the taste? Am I a mad woman????
NO! (She shouts…)
I’m completely sane and very happy, because that’s exactly what these are!
Now granted, the best known brand of tortilla chips are made from corn and these are flour, but the crunch, the texture, hands down beat the store bought ones any day!
Why You’ll Love these Homemade Tortillas
- They are relatively quick and easy to whip up
- As always, you know exactly what’s in them – no damaging seed oils or preservatives
- You can control the seasoning – top them with homemade taco seasoning, ranch powder, or just lightly salted while hot, it’s completely up to you!
- They taste SO much better than the store bought varieties.
What you may need
A batch of our homemade tortilla recipe, or store bought flour tortillas
A shallow cast iron/ frying pan
Knife or pizza cutter to cut the wedge shape – this is my pizza cutter, it makes short work of the stack
Tongs
A bowl lined with paper or towel to catch the grease
Lard or beef tallow for frying
Method
Start off with a batch of homemade tortillas from the recipe above, cooked and cooled.
Cut into triangles, starting in half, then each half in half again, and repeat.
Meanwhile, heat a cast iron pan on the stove and melt around 1/2 inch of fat (lard or beef tallow are the best choices)
Shallow fry for 1-2 mins each side
Once golden brown, remove to drain on a paper towel/cloth, and season with salt immediately.
Season with other flavourings as required. We used homemade taco seasoning, but it’s totally down to your preference.
It’s up to you if you allow them to cool, if you can keep everyone’s hands off them for that long.
Enjoy with salsa, or just on their own.
